Despite what they lead you to believe in the commercials when they tell you to “ask you’re doctor if you’re healthy enough for sex,” you probably won’t have a heart attack from having sex. In analyzing information from more than 4,500 people who experienced sudden cardiac arrest, less than 1 percent of those occurred during or immediately after sexual activity. Researchers don’t dispute that there are rare instances in which sex was linked with cardiac arrest but they point out that about 1 in 100 cases of cardiac arrest were linked to sex in men and just 1 in 1000 cases among women. In other words, it is possible but it isn’t probable that having sex will cause you to have a heart attack.
