Eddie George is coming back to Ohio, this time as the new head coach of Bowling Green State University’s football program. The former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL icon has agreed to a five-year deal, signaling a new chapter for both the Falcons and George’s budding coaching career. For locals, his return feels like a homecoming, as George’s name is etched in Ohio football history.
During his college days at Ohio State, George dazzled Buckeyes fans, rushing for over 3,700 yards and earning the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1995. His time in Columbus still holds a special place in the hearts of many Ohioans. That legacy carried over into the NFL, where he spent nine seasons, racking up more than 10,000 rushing yards, primarily with the Tennessee Titans. Now, the state that launched his football success welcomes him back, this time to shape a new generation of athletes.
George enters the role with solid head coaching credentials earned during his four seasons at Tennessee State. Despite coming in with no prior coaching experience, he turned the program around, leading the Tigers to a 22-16 overall record. His standout season came in 2024, when Tennessee State achieved a 9-4 record, capturing a share of the OVC-Big South title and earning its first FCS playoff berth since 2013. This success showcased George’s ability to inspire and produce results, silencing critics of his unconventional hiring.
For BGSU, George’s appointment represents a bold move with big ambitions. The program has enjoyed recent success, reaching three straight bowl games under previous coach Scot Loeffler. However, George’s arrival has sparked hopes for even greater heights.
More than just a coach, George is a familiar figure with deep ties to Ohio, which could foster stronger connections with the community, fans, and recruits. His leadership, championship pedigree, and vision are aligned with Bowling Green’s aspirations, making this a pivotal moment for the program’s future—and another promising chapter for an Ohio legend.
