We all know someone who can’t do anything without taking a picture of them doing it, unless we are that person.  It may be annoying to some but researchers say it may be a sign of a mental illness.  The mental illness has a name and that name is “selfitis”.  The researchers broke it down into three groups: borderline, acute and chronic.

3 selfies a day without posting them is considered borderline.  Posting 3 selfies a day puts you in the acute category and if you have an uncontrollable urge to take selfies and post at least 6 per day you are the chronic category.  The researchers consider “selfitis” a category of “technological addiction”

While the study started from a spoof article the two psychologists who did the research, Mark D. Griffiths and Janarthanan Balakrishnan did the research and published their findings in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.

Whether it is truly a mental illness may be debated for years but there is no doubt it is annoying.
