CALIFORNIA β€” Organizers and inmates in California are rallying on Monday against the state’s prion system for poor living conditions and other practices they say amount to systematic abuse and torture.

The rally comes after inmates in four of the states prisons waged a hunger strike that lasted nearly a month long in protest of their conditions.

Chief among the strikers’ five-point list of demands was a call for an end to so-called “debriefings,” lengthy interviews prison officials used to determine an inmates’ gang status. Prisoners complained the process often resulted in inmates being labeled snitches and targeted for violence by rivals.
