A group of Michigan Tech students recently staged a live slave trade auction in a hallway on their campus. The group claims the demonstration was solely for the purpose of bringing awareness to the modern day slave trade.

In the video below you will hear bystanders questioning the morals or intentions of this rally.

A college employee raises an opposition by asking “Was the cause you were trying to promote good? Yes, modern slavery is a horrible reality in our world and there needs to be attention brought to it, but was this the best way to do it?”

He later concludes, “I mean, what would be next? Live domestic disputes in order to draw attention to domestic violence?”

Claire John, a member of the organization combats the negativity. “The event was put on to combat the slavery that is going on in the world today, not in reference to the past. The money raised is being donated to an organization that works to stop human trafficking. The people in the video are only laughing and in a good mood because they’re excited about the success of the event in raising money to do good. Nonetheless, people were offended, and for that, I apologize. This is was our first year putting this on and we clearly weren’t prepared well enough.”
