The match, played in front of 85,000 and watched by an estimated 700 million more on television around the world, however, as Netherland tallied 23 yellow cards, and the first half encounter with attritional affair, blatant fouls and neither offensive looking to seize the moment, the finale barely surpassed the anticipated expectation from the fans perspective.
Ultimately, Spain won the title in the 116th minute with a 1-0 score- allowing them just the third country alongside West Germany and France to hold the World and European title at the same time.
With both sides hailed for playing the game very well throughout the tournament, and considering the two teams were at full strength for the final, one observing this match would had predicted a much more exciting and entertaining battle from the finalist. Instead, we were provided with a safe, tedious performance.
