Have you learned to control your stress levels? If not, you better start soon.

I recently came across a health-related issue that many people might shy away from discussing, but need to know what’s happening when you suddenly feel that unsettling feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Know what I’m referring to? It’s that weird rumble in the jungle that nobody wants to feel in the middle of your work day call IBD.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which affects as many as 1million Americans, is defined as two chronic diseases that create inflammation of the intestines: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Although stress doesn’t create IBD, it can actually aggravate IBD symptoms you might already experience such as abdominal pain, cramps, and diarrhea. Many of these symptoms also may be associated with flare-ups, which occur when the disease intermittently becomes active.

In a Canadian study, researchers survey participants suffering from IBD every three months for a year. During the year, 174 participants ended up having flare-ups, opposed to 209 whose IBD symptoms didn’t create havoc. There was no difference between the two groups with regard of NSAID or antibiotic use, or the incidence of infections; however, those who experienced flare-ups also reported higher stress levels as result of pivotal life events (such as death), or reported more unpleasant moods.
