Ohio — Doug Spak was not hired to sell the numbers.

But the new general manager of Radio One Inc.’s three-station Cincinnati cluster has numbers at the ready, if that’s what it takes to close a deal. In the February ratings period, for example, The Buzz (WDBZ AM-1230) led all stations in time spent listening with more than five hours per week. Radio One’s other stations, The Wiz (WIZF-FM 101.1) and MoJo (WMOJ-FM 100.3), ranked fourth and fifth.

“These stations have a unique position, tapped into an audience that’s very responsive,” he said.

That’s exactly what Barry Mayo wants to hear from Spak, an ad agency veteran who Mayo recruited to broadcasting after a chance meeting last year. Mayo is president of Radio One, a Lanham, Md.-based radio chain that specializes in formats for black listeners. The publicly traded company posted its third consecutive net loss in 2010, losing $28.6 million on net revenue of $279 million. Its 50-employee local enterprise represents about $10 million in sales, Mayo said.
