Earlier this week, a very alarming headline tugged at my heart strings and I wanted to share it with you as additional reports became available.

Have you ever participated in a trial as a witness? Well, one family’s loved one – namely Aaron Burns – was part of that special group of people we call key witnesses in a murder he allegedly witnessed back in February. His position as a witness was an effort to examine his testimony and prepare for the conviction of Keyvonte Criswell who was charged with murdering victim Jerald Travis.

Reportedly two men somehow associated with Criswell legally retrieved Burns’ name and contact information apparently from either the Hamilton County Clerk’s office and/or from Criswell’s attorney. Note that either method was indeed legal. When the two men finally found Burns, the unthinkable occurred and they actually killed him, too. Now the family of Burns and anyone else even remotely close to being willing to testify feels betrayed by the judicial system who sometimes pleads with witnesses to come forward.

Of course, there are a few more details to the story primarily raising the issues and concerns of the family of Burns, but our biggest issue here is that nothing was done to protect him it seems. Since it was legal for the two men who killed Burns to get his name, does that impact their intent or the level of surveillance of Burns’ life outside the courtroom? Why wasn’t there a witness protection reinforcement process? Or better yet, is there already one in place and it’s just as faulty as the system instituting it?

Read the rest of the story and hear directly from the family of Aaron Burns at WCPO.com. If you were a member of the Burns family, how would you feel today about all of this? What does this mean for future murder trials like this one? Is the judicial system at fault? Do you agree with the family?
