R&B singer, songwriter and exemplary record producer Harvey Fuqua, an early mentor to legendary singer Marvin Gaye has passed away as of early this morning at the age of 80.
Fuqua died after a heart attack at a Detroit hospital according to reports from the Motown Alumni Association.
Known and respected for bringing R&B/doo wop groups to the forefront, Fuqua was influential in the signing of the Moonglows with DJ Alan Freed and their eventual claim to fame. Their first hit single from 1954 is entitled “Sincerely.”
Fuqua later added legendary singer Marvin Gaye and a few others to the group in 1958 before launching Tri-Phi and Harvey Records back in 1961.
Motown Records founder Berry Gordy acknowledged Fuqua’s eye and ear for nurturing his group and its individual artists and was later hired to develop recording talent at Motown Records.
