We’re familiar with the white sand beaches, refreshing ocean water, beautiful sunsets and an exciting night life scene, but Cancún’s mayor might be another reason you’re familiar with the hot spot. Recently the extradition of their former governor and the arrest of Cancun’s mayor, both on drug-trafficking charges, have highlighted the dark side of the resort city and caused a dark cloud to rest over their image.

According to reports from USA Today, the controversy in Mexico shouldn’t affect holiday traveling and vacationing in the city as we get closer to the long Memorial Day weekend. If you didn’t know what took place, federal agents arrested Mayor Gregorio Sánchez earlier this week on Tuesday as he arrived at the Cancún Airport.

He is charged with conspiracy to commit drug crimes and of handling acquired illegal funds. That particular arrest also comes right on the heals of a major handover on May 10th of Mario Ernesto Villanueva. Villanueva, the state’s former governor, was served to U.S. authorities on additional charges of helping transport more than 200 tons of cocaine to the states.
