The road to recovery has begun once again for R&B legend El DeBarge with a recent announce that he has checked into a rehabilitation center this week to get himself together. Already on the comeback and making moves with his latest release Second Chance, some may be shocked that everything is not as it always seems.
The beloved 80s singer released an official statement late Monday afternoon concerning his addiction to crack cocaine, the conviction that followed and the two years he spent in prison and now his decision to turn his life back around.
“I hate to disappoint my fans, but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on my so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone,” the 49-year-old DeBarge said. “I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time.”
As you may already be aware, El DeBarge swiftly climbed back to the top of the charts in the last six months after a comeback appearance on this past summer’s BET Awards before launching a heavy and extremely busy promotional tour for the new album which garnered two Grammy nominations in the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song categories.
The singer was also days away from embarking on a national concert tour with fellow soul/R&B artists Kem and Ledisi. That particular tour was even scheduled to hit Cincinnati as early as next month at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. El DeBarge was already serving as opening act for the Queen of Hip Hop & Soul Mary J. Blige’s current tour.
Reps from the El DeBarge team say these commitments and others scheduled for 2011 so far with publicity appearances and more show dates have all been canceled. We wish El DeBarge nothing but the best and we pray that this time will ultimately be beneficial for the star who’s already proven that dreams do come true and everyone deserves a second chance.
