Jazz legend Sir George Shearing, the man behind the classic “Lullaby of Birdland” and the man responsible for leading the noted quintet that also carries his iconic name, died earlier today at age 91.
Known primarily for his wonderful works of musical composition and the contributions he’s made to tons of music catalogs, the blind since birth songwriter passed away due to congestive heart failure.
Working with jammin’ oldies stars, music icons of the 40s and 50s and many more along the way, Shearing found himself creating music for artists like Nat “King” Cole and Sarah Vaughan.
Take a look at some of his work in action with two of my favorite versions – a live performance of “Lullaby of Birdland” musical icon Ella Fitzgerald and yet another from the great Chaka Khan. Both are incredible and both paint a picture of just how important it is for us to continue the legacy of great music provided for us by the best singers and songwriters to ever live. Find out if you remember any others that spark a musical moment in history for you as well.

Now let’s give Chaka Khan some of this one, too. Compare and contrast their performances below on the message board.
