Besides attending church services and spending quality time with family, what was Cincinnati doing this past Sunday evening? If you were home watching television, you might have been counted in the 1.1 millon viewers who tuned in on Easter Sunday for the season premiere of BET’s Sunday Best – the gospel-themed singing competition now in its third season.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) reportedly generated approximately 1.1 million viewers, coming in slightly below the 1.7 million viewers garnered by the show’s season two premiere in 2009, according to network executives. The series, hosted by gospel great Kirk Franklin, did post a double-digit ratings gain of 32% versus the season-to-date Sunday time slot, according to the network.

The series has showcased thousands of aspiring vocalists and given the world of Black gospel music a plethora of new talent including season two winner Y’Anna Crawley of Washington, D.C. and the inaugural winner, Crystal Aikin of Tacoma, WA. Aikin, who’s debut CD on Verity Records stormed the gospel charts, recently performed on Easter Sunday during both Christ Alive! services held at Inspirational Baptist Church in Forest Park where Bishop Victor S. Couzens serves as pastor. Aikin is also a 2010 Stellar Award winner for New Artist of the Year. She has also recently been named a 41st Annual GMA Dove Award nominee.

Keep tuning into BET on Sunday evenings at 8pm EST (check you local listings for show repeats) for your weekly dose of Sunday Best. Each week during the hour-long contest, viewers will be treated to musical performances from the remaining hopefuls once the competition shifts past the audition mode. Along the 10-week journey, you’ll be entertained and inspired by the candid feedback from the all-star team of judges and witness a few surprise visits from an array of celebrity mentors, gospel music legends and more. BET’s Sunday Best is truly the talk of the town so don’t forget to share with us who you’re rooting for and check back in for show recaps right here on TheBuzzCincy.com.
