Arizona — Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday and an aide and a federal judge were killed when an assailant opened fire outside a grocery store as the Democratic lawmaker met with constituents, officials said.

A 9-year-old girl also was killed, authorities said.

C.J. Karamargin, a spokesman for Giffords, said the congresswoman underwent surgery and other Giffords staff members were injured. Karamargin said he had no other information on the conditions of the injured or on the circumstances of the shooting.

In latest details, Tuscon surgeon Dr. Peter Rhee said during a press conference that he was “very optimistic” that Giffords would recover from the shooting.

Federal officials told NBC News that U.S. District Court Judge John M. Roll was among those who had died from injuries suffered in the shooting. He was the chief judge in Arizona, appointed in 1991 by the first President Bush. He became chief judge in 2006.
