Ohio Governor Signs Budget Allocating $600M for New Browns Stadium

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a two-year, $60 billion state budget that includes $600 million in unclaimed funds for a new Cleveland Browns stadium. The Haslam Sports Group, which owns the Browns, plans to build a $2.4 billion domed stadium in Brook Park, about 15 miles south of downtown Cleveland.
This funding covers half of the public investment needed for the project. Private investors will cover the remaining costs.
The budget also changes Ohio’s “Art Modell Law,” enacted in 1996 to prevent teams from relocating without first offering the city a chance to buy the team. These changes aim to ease the Browns’ move while addressing legal concerns.
The Browns acquired a 176-acre site in Brook Park for $76 million and plan to open the new stadium by September 2029. The project will create jobs and boost economic growth in the region.
State officials and the Browns see the new stadium as a positive development. However, some local leaders raised concerns about using unclaimed funds and the potential impact on Cleveland.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and County Executive Chris Ronayne criticized the move, citing possible economic drawbacks and legal challenges.
