Last October a woman in Hingham, Massachusetts went off on a postal worker for not taking back a certified letter that she had signed for.

Erika Winchester had signed for a certified letter but then realized it was addressed to her husband and tried to give it back. Postal worker Hugson Jean then tried to explain that he couldn’t take back the letter once it was signed for.

Jean was fired several days later but Christine Dugas, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of the Southeast New England District in Providence, said that the end of his contract had nothing to do with the incident involving Winchester.

Winchester was arraigned on charges of assault and battery and committing a hate crime after the incident. The judge said the complaint would be held for one year, and if no further complaints were filed against Winchester, the charges would be dismissed.

In an interview, Jean said the video tape was the last straw in the conspiracy that had been building to fire him. He said he believed the postal service saw him as a troublemaker rather than a victim.

“They have a broken system,” Jean said in the interview. “They have to fix it because inside politics or bureaucracy there doesn’t work.”
