Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders has told sources that she supports the legalization of marijuana.

California is voting on Proposition 19 next month, which is the initiative to legalize pot not only for medicinal uses, but also for recreational uses.

Elders stressed that it’s not a toxic substance and pointed to the damaging effects of alcohol, which is a legal substance.

“We have the highest number of people in the world being criminalized, many for non-violent crimes related to marijuana,” she said. “We can use our resources so much better.”
