Alicia Keys called for “Less Labels, More Expressions” after her son feared judgment for his rainbow manicure.

In a nearly three-minute Instagram “rant” video, as Keys calls it, she explains how her 4-year-old son Genesis was at the nail salon, excited about his rainbow manicure.

The artist painted each nail a different color, fulfilling her son’s request. After he had the manicure, however, he questioned his decision.

“He looked at me after and said, “Mommy, I don’t want this on my nails.’ And I said, ‘Why? You were so sure, you’re good.’ And he’s like, ‘People are not gonna like it,'” Keys says.

She then expresses frustration over her young son, fearing judgment for his nail polish.

“Can you believe this? Four years old. He’s four, and he already understands the concept that someone is gonna judge him because he chose rainbow color on his nails,” she says.

Keys explains that she encouraged him to keep the polish on and express his creativity, and told him, “Who cares what anybody else says?”

She says she told her son many others wear nail polish — but questioned why her son might fear judgment over it.

“It just got me to thinking how completely judged we are all the time,” Keys says.

She says she feels there are “masculine and feminine energies inside of us all,” and continued that it “gets concerning” that people “can’t explore” those energies.

She says if her boys want to express “the feminine energy that’s inside them,” that there are “stereotypes” and “judgments” and “rules.”

“It’s really frustrating to me,” she says.

“This is a very normal, ancient, powerful, spiritual understanding that we all have masculine and feminine energies, and we should be able to explore and express them however, we want to.”

“Why can’t we just express the different energies that are inside of us?” Keys questioned.
