Jane M. Bolin was the first African American woman to graduate from Yale Law School, the first to join the New York City Bar Association and first to join the New York City police department. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York she was the daughter of a lawyer Gaius C. Bolin.
She was very active in the community and was passionate about children’s rights and education. In 1939 she was appointed Judge of Domestic Relations Court (Family Court) by Mayor Fiorello La Guardia at the New York World Fair in 1939. She remained in this position for 40 years until her retirement in 1979. Jane Bolin died in 2007 at the age of 98.
