After the deadly school shooting that took the lives of 17 of their classmates and teachers, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida returned to class on today. Heavily armed police, grief counselors and hugs greeted the students who’s lives are forever changed.

The school resumed today with a half day of classes scheduled. Students did not have to bring backpacks, as that is reminder of how the accused gunman was able to bring his rifle into the school and take so many lives and injure so many. Stoneman Douglas students are now joining the growing ranks of American schoolchildren who have had to learn how to cope with haunting memories after their campuses became the site of a national tragedy.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced a $500 million investment in school safety and mental health as part of an action plan announced last week.

Sending prayers to these courageous students and faculty and hoping for change in gun laws.
