President Barack Obama visited the state of Louisiana on Tuesday to survey the unprecedented flood damage after much criticism from local and national authorities for not ending his vacation early. The visit also afforded the President an opportunity to meet with the family of Alton Sterling, a Black man shot by police in Baton Rouge on July 6, and the families of three Baton Rouge officers who were shot and killed just 11 days later. Supporters Raise Over $100,000 For Ethiopian Olympian

Feyisa Lilesa, an Ethiopian runner, took a daring stand in Rio after winning a silver medal in the men’s marathon, crossing his hands to form an X. The gesture was a political protest against his nation, where hundreds have been jailed or killed for anti-government demonstrations.“If I go back to Ethiopia, maybe they will kill me,” Lilesa said during a presser after the race. Supporters used a GoFundMe campaign to raise over $100,000 in assistance, and have helped to hire a legal team to represent Lilesa and his family. Read more.


John Legend & Tika Sumpter Bring The Story Of Black Wall Street To The TV Screen

Award-winning singer John Legend and his production company, Get Lifted Film Co., will back a series that explores the story of Black Wall Street, a haven for middle class Black families in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the early 1900s. The community was ravaged after one of the largest mass killings of Blacks: 300 people were killed over a two-day period. After Legend’s successful series Underground racked up ratings for WGN America, the network signed on to premiere Legend’s newest venture. Actress Tika Sumpter, who plays Michelle Obama in Get Lifted’s Southside With You, will also showrun as executive producer. Read more.


Taraji P. Henson and MAC Cosmetics Partner Up

Taraji P. Henson, the actress who owns the role of “Cookie Lyon” on Fox’s Empire, announced a makeup line with MAC earlier in the week. The collaboration, called “M.A.C Taraji,” contains a total of six products, including a black eyeliner, mascara, two shades of skinfinish, a face brush, and a lipstick called “Strip Me Down.” Henson’s line will be available to the public on September 6, just a few weeks shy of Empire’s season 3 premiere.
