While the battle for the GOP nomination was going on inside Detroit's Fox Theatre, protesters gathered outside. People are not just concerned about who will be the next U.S. President, they're worried about jobs and Flint's water crisis.

While Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump bragged about his penis size at the start of Thursday night’s raucous debate in Detroit, Michigan, the Flint water crisis was merely the 33rd question.

The Detroit Free Press reports that with a little more than 30 minutes left in the two-hour debate, a questioner asked Florida Sen. Marco Rubio about plans to resolve the water crisis, noting that both Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, had visited the beleaguered city.

Water in the city is so poisoned by lead that it qualifies as “toxic waste.” And Rubio called it a systemic failure at every level of government, but said, “the politicizing of it, I think, is really unfair,” the report says.

I don’t think someone woke up one morning and said, ‘Let’s … poison someone,’” Rubio said, the report continues. He then praised Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, saying: “I give the governor credit. He took responsibility.”

Rubio, however, is wrong. Michigan State House Minority Leader Tim Greimel on Wednesday called on Snyder to resign, saying, “The governor must have known back in 2014 about how serious this water contamination problem was,” writes the Free Press. “If he didn’t, he’s the worst manager ever.

Maybe Rubio thought the Flint question was part of the joke session that kicked off the debate, which reduced candidates to nothing more than bit players in a reality show.

Trouble began when Trump used his opening statement to respond to criticism from Rubio about the size of his hands.

From CNN:

“Look at those hands, are they small hands?” the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination said, raising them for viewers to see. “And, he referred to my hands — ‘if they’re small, something else must be small.’ I guarantee you there’s no problem. I guarantee.”

Rubio in recent days revived a decades-old insult, mocking Trump for having relatively slight hands.

“He’s always calling me Little Marco. And I’ll admit he’s taller than me. He’s like 6’2, which is why I don’t understand why his hands are the size of someone who is 5’2,” Rubio said in Virginia on Sunday. “And you know what they say about men with small hands? You can’t trust them.”

If these are the best candidates the Republicans have to run for the presidency, no wonder the party is imploding.
