We live in the age of ‘the beat’. Makeup artist like Tatiana Ward, better known as Beat Face Honey, and stars like Nicki Minaj as well as Kim Kardashian popularized this look. You know it when you see it: Laid eyebrows. Makeup dancing off light and mixing shades to create the effect of a perfectly chisled nose. Contour crazy. Lips that can’t remember the last time they went without liner…

While Nicki Minaj made this look more mainstream, even she has dialed back and gone for a more natural look over the past two years. She explained,

“I went so far to the other side that there’s only one place to go from there. You can either continue doing costumes or you can just say, ‘Hey guess what? This will shock them even more. Doing nothing will shock them even more.” ~ Nicki Minaj

Au natural will always be here, but it’s ‘the beat’ that you take to the party. I love a good contour and beating ones face is undoubtedly an artistic adventure. However, when is it too much?

Answer: Watch Exhibit A below.

Neck contouring? Yes, beauties, we’re doing this now. Neck contouring is a practice most commonly used to create length and slimmer necklines as well as hide lines or minor imperfections.

…and it’s not just necks. People are contouring their abs, clavicle, and creating cleavage as well. At what point does illusion turn into delusion?

Makeup is meant to enhance and create. However, when you are sacrificing the neckline of all your white shirts and spending time drawing on abs instead of working for them, it’s time to reevaluate your relationship with makeup.

Long live ‘the beat’, but don’t let it pummel your self-esteem into some of these ridiculous practices.
