Lee Daniels, the director of The Butler and creator of FOX’s Empire is entering new territory to direct an upcoming documentary, The Apollo Theater Film Project. The doc will chronicle the history and impact of the acclaimed concert hall from its establishment in 1934 until present day.

The Apollo Theater, which took the Harlem Renaissance by storm in New York City has launched the careers of many famed artists at its Amateur Night including Billie Holliday, James Brown, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, and many more. In addition to kickstarting careers, the concert hall was recognized as the premiere venue for black performers and audiences during segregation.

The reel, which will be produced by White Horse Pictures, will touch on many of these history-defining moments. “I used to go to the Apollo Theater as a kid and never in a million years would I have imagined I would be back to be doing this. It is very special for me.” Daniels said about the theater.
