A top lawyer in Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration abruptly resigned Monday after a federal judge determined that he intentionally concealed critical evidence in a trial for a fatal police-involved shooting “and then lied about his reasons,” reports The Chicago Tribune.
Senior Corporation Counsel Jordan Marsh resigned after U.S. District Judge Edmond Chang imposed sanctions against him and the city, ordering that they pay attorney’s fees to the victim’s family, notes the report.
Judge Chang tossed a previous ruling and ordered a new case in the wrongful lawsuit death brought by the family of Darius Pinex, who was killed by officers after a 2011 traffic stop on the city’s South Side in Englewood, the report says.
Per The Tribune:
“Attorneys who might be tempted to bury late-surfacing information need to know that, if discovered, any verdict they win will be forfeit and their clients will pay the price,” Chang wrote in his 72-page opinion. “They need to know it is not worth it.”
Corporation Counsel Stephen Patton said Monday night that the city would “double down” on its efforts to properly train lawyers to produce records. He rejected the notion that recent sanctions pointed to systemic problems in his office.
Marsh had worked for the city since 1997, and the incident represented the latest “black eye for the mayor’s office in the continuing fallout over the city’s handling of police shootings,” writes the news outlet.
The revelation comes after the release of a controversial video showing Laquan McDonald being shot 16 times by an officer. Emanuel’s administration is accused of fighting to block the video’s release for nearly a year.
