After Chicago Police ‘Accidentally’ Kill Grandmother, Mayor Demands Reform:
Two more shooting deaths by Chicago police are prompting swift action by the mayor — as well as by residents who want the mayor to go.
The latest upheaval came after Chicago police fatally shot Bettie Jones, 55, and Quintonio LeGrier, 19, while answering a call about a domestic disturbance.
But Jones, a mother of five, shouldn’t have been shot at all, police say. She was “accidentally struck and tragically killed” by an officer.
And many question the shooting of LeGrier, who police say was charging toward them with an aluminum baseball bat.CNN affiliate WLS reported that LeGrier’s family said he suffered from a mental illness, though his mother disputed that.
Monster Storm System Spawns Tornadoes, Blizzards, Flooding:
A monster storm system stretching from New Mexico to Michigan and Georgia marched eastward Sunday, bringing a broad mix of weather from tornadoes and flash floods to blizzards and freezing rain.
A day after fatal tornadoes and summer-like temperatures in the Dallas area, the immediate forecast called for freezing weather and snow, and the National Weather Service reported quarter-size hail south of the city.
The Texas panhandle was under a blizzard warning along with eastern New Mexico and parts of Oklahoma.
Winter storm warnings were in effect from Texas north to Michigan, and at least nine states farther east were on alert for flash floods, which already killed at least 13 in Missouri and Illinois.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Makes $1 Billion In A Record 12 Days:
Disney (DIS) said Sunday that its blockbuster broke the $1 billion mark around the world faster than any other film in history.
The sci-fi adventure movie reached the milestone 12 days after its global release. That is one day earlier than the previous record holder — Universal’s “Jurassic World,” which was released earlier this year.
The seventh film in the “Star Wars” saga has made $544.5 million in the U.S.
After only 10 days, it is the fifth biggest film in U.S. box office history.
“The Force Awakens” made $1 billion in half the time it took another Disney hit franchise, Marvel’s“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” to do so this summer.
The film also just had the best Christmas day at the box office, and it captured the biggest second weekend, raking in $153.5 million.
