Tis the season for overspending, overeating and overlooking the real meaning of Christmas. But a notable voice of faith is saying, don’t fall into the trap.

If you are caught up in the commercialization of the Christmas season, gospel singer Donnie McClurkin says you’re missing the point.

“That’s never what Jesus wanted for us,” said the Grammy-winning recording artist during a press conference in Lagos, Nigeria.

56-year-old McClurkin, who is in the African country for the 10th annual “The Experience”—a praise night that brings together global ministers and singers— said, “We forget that, while we compartmentalize God, He’s an everyday Jesus,” in a Dec. 4  presser aired on Periscope.

The pastor of Perfecting Faith Church in New York told media, “It’s not just a Christmas, yuletide, merry feeling. He is the God that blessed us through 365 days a year. And as He provided for us before Christmas, He will still provide for us during and after Christmas.”

McClurkin, who ministered at the “Dominion Worship Concert” in Lagos in 2013, is returning to worship with various tribes and nations, and is a well-known favorite.
