A New Orleans pastor was arrested on Wednesday for sexually assaulting female relatives as young as five years old.

According to The Times-Picayune, Reverend Dr. Sherman Smith, 56, was booked on charges of molestation of a juvenile or a person with a mental or physical disability, aggravated rape of a victim under the age of 13, sexual battery, and two counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile. The pastor allegedly assaulted three of his relatives over a decade ago.

One of the victims came forward on Oct. 14 and claimed Smith sexually assaulted her when she was five years old. One of the victims was also disabled. Details regarding the third victim are unknown.

The Times-Picayune reports:

The woman who filed the initial complaint said the assault happened at Smith’s residence in the 400 block of Park Street, the police report says. The report says the victim recalled how after the assault, Smith “tasted and smelled” like cigars.  A second victim, also a relative of Smith, said he sexually assaulted her when she was in elementary school, approximately. Documents say the assault also happened at Smith’s Park Street residence.

The second victim told police that Smith placed a towel over her eyes during the assault, the document says.

Smith’s next hearing is scheduled for December. He appeared in court last week, where his bond was placed at $180,000. Smith’s church, the Second Highway Baptist, has yet to comment on his arrest.
