Jamal Mallard, 29, was discovered dead early Sunday morning in a Jackson, Miss. jail cell and his family is searching for answers.

“We have had an incident occur here at the Jackson Jail, and we want to be as transparent as we can about it,” Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance said.

According to the Clarion Ledger, Mallard was booked at 3:43 a.m. He was discovered unresponsive around 6 a.m.

“He was found on the floor of one of our holding cells. (American Medical Response) was called. Once he arrived, they pronounced the individual dead,” Vance said.

Mallard allegedly led police on a foot chase after allegedly stealing a lawn mower. He allegedly escaped and returned home. That’s when his mother called authorities.

“We received a call from that location that he had returned and was asleep. Three officers were dispatched and picked the individual up,” Vance said.

“I thought I was doing a good thing, and then my child ends up dead,” said an inconsolable Nanette Mallard. “I should have just kept him at home.”

Vance said that Mallard was charged with petty larceny. He was in the holding cell for two hours before being found unresponsive. According to JPD, there were no signs of trauma.

“(There were) no signs of trauma to this individual’s body that we found. No complaints of pain, nothing to indicate something was going wrong with his health,” Vance said.

Mallard said that her son had no illnesses.

“I wasn’t allowed to see my child before they carried him out, you know what I’m saying. I want to see my child whole and then I want to examine him for myself. I want to see if there was any bruises on my child because he didn’t leave here like that,” said Mallard.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is currently investigating.
