Jon Stewart’s successor Trevor Noah knocked his first episode of The Daily Show out the park last night by “continuing the war on bullsh***” with mentions of Pope Francis, John Boehner, and everything in between.

The 31-year-old South African comedian opened the show with a heartfelt ode to Stewart, but reminded viewers they have a new stepdad – who just so happens to be Black.

Noah also took a few digs at Americans — because, why not? — with the reminder that many American celebrities were offered the job, but an immigrant came through to take the position.

The Huffington Post reports:

“This is surreal,” began the new “Daily Show” host. “Growing up in the dusty streets of South Africa, I never dreamed that I would one day have, well, two things: an indoor toilet and a job as host of the ‘Daily Show.’ And now I have both. And I’m quite comfortable with one of them.”

With many of The Daily Show‘s writers and directors still on board, changes to the show aren’t that extreme. Noah’s jokes were direct and creative and for many critics, still vintage to Stewart’s tenure, but too safe for those looking for big controversy. He did release a lethal joke about crack and meth, leading to a Whitney Houston dig that almost went over the audience’s heads.

Critics also believe Noah’s first guest Kevin Hart may have exhibited some of his weak points when it comes to interviewing.

Variety reports:

As for Noah’s skills as an interviewer, Kevin Hart, frankly, wasn’t the ideal guest to offer much insight regarding those chops, yielding an exchange that was loud and manic, much like the comic’s act. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is slated for Wednesday, which should offer a better sense of the new host in that regard.

Filling Stewart’s shoes isn’t going to be easy, but it looks like Noah is poised to walk around in new shoes of his own. Check out his opening monologue above and his interview with Kevin Hart here.
