Laurence Fishburne, Roots, Alex Haley, Blackish

In 1977, an unforgettable moment in film and television was created when ABC aired the Roots miniseries. Now in 2015, the remake’s exceptional cast is complete.

Although it was an adaptation of the Alex Haley novel Roots: The Saga of An American Family, Roots was not written around fabrications about slavery. The work crafted a story based off the real-life experiences from Africa to the many plantations in America holding people of the African Diaspora in slavery.

Laurence Fishburne will be taking on the role of Alex Haley in the new edition. Forest Whitaker is set to play Fiddler, an older man in bondage who advises Kunta Kinte as he tries to escape from captivity. Lead protagonist Kinte will be played by Malachi Kirby and Rege Jean-Price. Anna Paquin will play the wife of a Confederate officer. Other talented acts include:

  • Derek Luke as Silla Ba Dabba
  • Anika Noni Rose as Kizzy
  • Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Tom Lea
  • Erica Tazel as Matilda
  • Chad L. Coelman as Mingo

Roots is currently undergoing production in New Orleans, with the crew relocating to the set in South Africa later this month. The four-night and eight-hour scripted television experience will air on A&E soon.
