Sixteen-year-old actress Amandla Stenberg made headlines when she called out several people in the entertainment industry for cultural appropriation. Stenberg, who left her mark on the film series The Hunger Games, is now using a different avenue to bring attention to race relations. She is launching a new comic book series called “NIOBE: She is Life;” a coming of age narrative about a woman of color. “I was drawn to give voice to Niobe and co-write her story because her journey is my journey. I connect to her mixed racial background and quest to discover her innate powers and strengths, to learn who she truly is,” said Stenberg in an interview. The comic book series is being released under Stranger Comics, and is illustrated by Ashley A. Woods and co-written by Sebastian A. Jones. “NIOBE” is scheduled for release in November. Read more.
NYU Cuts Ties With Cosby
Comedian Bill Cosby’s career accomplishments have taken a huge hit thanks to a series of public accusations that he sexually abused and drugged women in decades past. The latest institution to join the long list of others who have cut ties with Cosby is New York University. NYU will no longer associate Cosby’s name with the “Future Filmmakers Workshop” they provide for high school students. Throughout the 1990s, Cosby hosted several concerts to benefit the program. A spokesman from the school said they “removed the Cosby name in light of recent events.” NYU will move forward and continue to offer the workshops for students. Read more.
Overall Unemployment Hits Seven-Year Low, But Black Unemployment Ticks Upward
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of people who are unemployed has hit a seven-year low. The rate has fallen from 5.3% to 5.1%. There were 173,000 jobs added to the economy last month. As the number of people without jobs is decreasing, average hourly earnings are on the rise. Wage growth has seen a 0.3% month-over-month increase. However, the Black unemployment rate is up slightly in August, at 9.5%, vs. 9.1% in July. This report will have an influence on whether the Federal Reserve will increase interest rates. Read more.
