It’s official! The U.S. and Cuba have formally restored diplomatic relations a year after the two nations decided to rekindle their relationship after more than 50 years of contention. The United States has opened an embassy in Havana, and Cuba opened an embassy in Washington D.C. Although this marks a major step in the connection between the two countries, lasting issues still remain. A U.S. state department spokesperson said there are still “issues that we don’t see eye to eye on.” There are restrictions for Americans who want to travel to Cuba and there is a trade embargo that prohibits companies in the United States from doing business with Cuba. Cuba’s president, Raul Castro, wants the embargo removed, but Congress would have to vote on the decision. Read more.


White House Initiative’s HBCU Executive Director Dies

Dr. George Cooper, the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, has passed away. Dr. Cooper, who was a Tallahassee native, played an integral role in pushing HBCUs forward so that students who attended these schools could receive an exceptional education. President Obama released a statement about Dr. Cooper’s passing. “George spent the majority of his life ensuring that students at our nation’s HBCUs were receiving a quality education and had the necessary resources to succeed and make their communities and our country better,” he said. “George’s passing is a great loss for my Administration, the HBCU and higher education communities and for everyone that knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Diane, family and friends during this difficult time.”


TV One’s “Unsung Hollywood” Explores the Journeys of Black Actors

The new season of TV One’s Unsung series will delve into the lives of some of the most notable people in Black Hollywood. The new series, Unsung Hollywood, will reveal never-before-told stories of legends like Bernie Mac, George Wallace, Billy D Williams, and Sammy Davis Jr. “Unsung Hollywood recognizes and honors performers and productions that have paved the way for many of today’s headliners through archival and contemporary clips, plus exclusive behind-the-scenes footage,” said the network in a statement. “The series also features in-depth personal interviews with the talent and/or family members, friends, industry associates, fellow entertainers and various cultural commentators.” The series is slated to begin on Wednesday, July 22 at 8PM/ET.
