Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry is extracting his foot from his mouth – not for the first time – this time over remarks he made about the massacre at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.
One day after calling the murder of 9 people an “accident,” Rick Perry backtracked, according to CNN, and said the victims were “gunned down in an absolute heinous hate crime inside of their place of worship.”
Yesterday, a spokesman said Perry had meant to say “incident” instead of “accident,” when he used the massacre as an occasion to slam President Obama with the following words, according to CNN:
Any time there is an accident like this, the President is clear,” Perry said in response. “He doesn’t like for Americans to have guns, and so he uses every opportunity, this being another one, to basically go parrot that message.”
Meanwhile, Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton called for tightened gun control on Saturday during an address before the U.S. Conference on Mayors in San Francisco, according to the San Jose Mercury News, saying:
You can’t watch massacre after massacre and not come to the conclusion that, as President Barack Obama said, we must tackle this challenge with urgency and conviction.
Clinton also said:
We can have common sense gun reforms that keep weapons out of the hands of criminals and the violently unstable, while respecting responsible gun owners.
