It’s long been known that teachers can transform and save lives, but a Detroit, Michigan gym teacher just set a new bar.

Nadirah Muhammad, 39, a gym teacher at West Side Academy in Detroit, donated a kidney to A’Ja Booth, 18, who returned to school on Tuesday to a red carpet greeting after the successful transplant in December, according to The Detroit News.

During the welcome-back ceremony in the gym, A’Ja cried as she was overcome with emotion.

“This is what we do as teachers,” Muhammad, a wife and mom, said, according to The News. “I did not do it for the accolades. I saw a human being in need and if it were my child, I’d want someone to step forward and help him.”

From The News:

The donor and recipient came together after Muhammad met A’Ja in her dance class during winter semester last school year. In May 2014, the teacher noticed a book A’Ja had written, and asked if she could read it.

The book was A’Ja’s story of being a kidney patient, undergoing dialysis and needing a transplant. Muhammad was immediately moved to help.

After doctors determined teacher and student were a match, Muhammad’s kidney was removed seven months later at Henry Ford Hospital and transplanted into A’Ja at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Nearly seven weeks later, Muhammad returned to work at West Side Academy.

A’Ja is scheduled to graduate on June 8, pending the completion of online courses, the report says.

We’re glad Muhammad is “that teacher,” as in awesome! What a powerful and inspirational story.
