Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson

Earlier this week, the parents of Kendrick Johnson, a teenager whose body was found rolled up in a gym mat at his Georgia high school, went to court to face misdemeanor charges related to a protest in 2013. His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson (pictured), were convicted but won’t serve any jail time. State Court Judge Mark Mitchell initially sentenced them to 12 months in jail, but put a suspension on the sentence so that they won’t have to serve time, pay a fine, or receive probation. Five other family members were convicted along with his parents for blocking the entrance to the Lowndes County Courthouse in Valdosta, Georgia, during the 2013 protest. The demonstration took place after Johnson’s family was upset with the sparse details that they got from investigators about what happened to their son. Read more.

Judge Grants Use of Marvin Gaye Song in Copyright Trial

The saga in the Marvin Gaye copyright infringement lawsuit against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams continues. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge John Kronstadt claimed that he made an error when he said earlier this week that the recording of Gaye’s song “Got To Give It Up” wouldn’t be able to be used during the trial. “This order represents a change from this earlier view based on the court’s further (self-imposed) consideration of the proof required,” read his new ruling. “Any potential prejudice to (Thicke and Williams) caused the by the airing of Gaye’s voice, which is not protected, is something that could perhaps be addressed by a limiting instruction,” he said. The trial is slated to begin on Feb. 10th. Read more.

2 Chainz To Run for Mayor in His Hometown?

Georgia-bred Rapper 2 Chainz wants his voice to be heard beyond the realm of music. A few weeks ago he was featured on Nancy Grace’s “HLN” show, where the two engaged in a heated debate about the legalization of marijuana. Now it’s reported that 2 Chainz, whose name is Tauheed Epps, is considering running for the mayor in his hometown of College Park, Georgia. “I’m a musician, not a politician,” he said in a recent interview. “I’m supposed to be running for mayor in College Park. I got everybody wishing. I’m really going to do this little mayor thing in College Park. I’m just trying to make sure I have the right qualifications.” If he does decide to enter the mayoral race, he will have to go up against Jack Longino, who has been the mayor of College Park for 19 years.
