Officer Darryl Jouett (pictured) of the Erlanger, Kentucky, Police Department was out to dinner with his wife in Cincinnati when a freak accident occurred. While in an elevator, he tried to adjust the .40 caliber semi-automatic weapon in his holster and it suddenly discharged.  The bullet bounced off an elevator wall, then circled back, lodging in his stomach according to WCPO.

The veteran officer, who has been with the force for some 26 years, seemed to have had a run of just plain old bad luck. Capt. Mike John, who spoke to WCPO, remarked, “Obviously, you have somebody that’s used to handling firearms.  It’s very unusual to see somebody discharge a firearm, accidentally, in a confined space like that.”

Investigators are still trying to determine whether Jouett had the gun safety on when it went off in his holster.

The injured police officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reportedly, the injury was not life-threatening.
