juan-joseph2Juan Joseph, 27, the quarterbacks coach at West St. John High School and former Millsaps College football standout, was shot and killed outside of Allure nightclub in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Sunday night, reports The Clarion Ledger.

Joseph was walking to the car with two men around 2:00 a.m. when one of the them began arguing with two men in a vehicle. As the altercation escalated, one of the men opened fire and struck Joseph in the torso. He later died at a local hospital of his injuries.

Joseph, who lived in the close-knit 2,600-resident city of Edgard and was a former teacher at West St. John, was a graduate of the school, where he was a member of the Rams’ 2003 and 2004 Class 2A State Championship teams.

He graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., with a Bachelors in marketing, finance, and a Masters in business administration. He was also a student athlete there, winning the Conerly Trophy in 2008, an honor given to the top college football player in the state. That year he beat out Ole Miss offensive lineman Michael Oher [pictured far left], whose story the movie “The Blind Side” depicted, and Ole Miss defensive lineman Peria Jerry [pictured far right]. Jerry and Oher were first-round draft picks during the 2009 NFL draft.

Also a former Arena Football quarterback, Joseph had played professional football in the United States and Canada before becoming a coach at West St. John in 2011.

LeMark Cloud, 25, was arrested in connection with Joseph’s shooting death on Tuesday and charged with illegal use of a weapon and felony possession of a firearm.

Kendric Cloud, Lemark’s cousin, has also been named a suspect and remains at large.

“At this time, we don’t know who pulled the trigger,” said a spokesperson with the Baton Rouge police department. “We’re hoping once Kentric is either turned in or turns himself in, more information can be obtained. But through the course of the investigation, through witnesses, investigators were able to put both of them there to list them as in connection with Joseph’s death.”

Joseph leaves to mourn him his wife of two years and a 4-year-old daughter. The couple’s second child is due soon and they just held a baby shower. “It’s so sad,” said Malana Joseph (no relation). “Now she’ll never know him.”

A fund has been set up to help the Joseph family with expenses. See details below.

And over on Facebook, former Millsaps left tackle Adam Williams gave one of the most touching, public tributes of them all.

A Left Tackle is supposed to protect his Quaterback’s [sic] blindside. For 2 years you trusted me to protect you from the threats you couldn’t see-and I did it wit [sic] honor. In 2 years we lost 4 games together, it was a great run! I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you from this one bro…

That run continued off the field, you were a great fiend and role model. Child of God, scholar, Son, Husband, coach and FATHER.

Love you bro, you will be missed.
