Sheryl Lee Ralph may be one of the hardest working women in show business. Not only is she married to Pennsylvania state senator Vincent Hughes, she’s playing dual roles on TV – she’s Claudette on Showtimes’s Ray Donovan and Maggie on Instant Mom on Nick Mom. And she’s producing Mighty Real, a musical about 80’s disco superstar Sylvester.

Although her husband is a liberal Democratic and her Ray Donovan co-star, Jon Voight, is  a staunch conservative (who’s estranged from his daughter Angelina Jolie) Ralph says it doesn’t impact their working relationship.

“We never talk about any of that. All we do is just work. All we do is make that onscreen magic. We don’t talk about each other’s personal lives because that might create a different kind of magic,” she says. “Don’t ask me how I turned into his ride or die chick or how I turned into the love of his life, but it’s for real.”

Ralph is a big part of the show’s second season and she’s enjoying the role, especially since the show creator, Ann Biderman, is the woman who also created the gritty TV cop drama Southland which starred Regina King. Biderman’s world of tough guys and the tough women who love them has allowed Ralph the rare chance to stretch her acting chops.
