California Dad Attacks 11-Year-Old for Bullying His Son

A California man was arrested by police after attacking an 11-year-old boy who was reportedly bullying his 9-year-old son. Burnis Hurd, according to police, grabbed the child and bashed his head against the bus window and shouted threats against not just that child, but others on the bus who were watching. Reports say the driver did not intercede, the complaint was brought by the 11-year-old child who was assaulted by the father. A relative of the child wants the man prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Hurd has been charged with child abuse and corporal injury to a child. Read more.

Michigan Senate Approves Detroit Bankruptcy Bills With $195 Million In State Aid For The City

Michigan’s Senate approved on Tuesday spending $195 million to help prevent steeper cuts in Detroit retiree pensions as part of a deal designed to shield valuable city-owned art from being sold and resolve the largest public bankruptcy in U.S. history.The Republican-led chamber voted 21-17 to contribute the state funds to join $466 million in commitments from 12 foundations and the Detroit Institute of Arts. The pool of money would shore up Detroit’s two retirement systems while the city’s art museum and its assets would be transferred to a private nonprofit. A delighted Republican Gov. Rick Snyder said he will sign the legislation in a day or two after proofing the bills, which passed the GOP-controlled House about two weeks ago. Read more.

Jesse Jackson Jr. Could Leave Prison Sooner Than Expected

Convicted ex-Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. may taste freedom even sooner than expected. The disgraced former Democratic Representative from Illinois will be eligible to leave federal prison and serve out the final year of his sentence in a halfway house beginning Sept. 20, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman told the Chicago Tribune Tuesday. Just a day earlier, officials announced Jackson could have more than three months shaved off his sentence. Read more.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a new task force Monday to overhaul how New York City’s corrections system treats the mentally ill — both in jail and out — following the grisly deaths of two inmates with psychological problems. Corrections experts applauded the task force as an important first step in addressing the problem underscored in Associated Press reports on the deaths of two mentally ill inmates — one who an official said “basically baked to death” in an overheated cell and another who sexually mutilated himself while locked up alone for seven days.
