Jimmy Carter: US ‘Dormant’ On Inequality

Former President Jimmy Carter on Tuesday night lamented continuing inequalities between black and white Americans during a 50th anniversary celebration of the Civil Rights Act in Texas that will feature four of the five living U.S. presidents this week. Carter said “too many people are at ease” with black unemployment rates that exceed the national average and schools in some places that he described as basically still segregated. Read more.

Attorney General Eric Holder got into a tense confrontation with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) during a his appearance before a House Judicial Committee oversight hearing Tuesday. Black Enterprise Exec To Be Appointed NYC City Finance Commissioner By Mayor Bill De Blasio

A day after the acting City Finance Commissioner Beth Goldman tendered her resignation, Mayor Bill de Blasio may have found her permanent replacement. De Blasio will reportedly replace Goldman with current Black Enterprise Magazine Executive Vice President and Chief Operating and Financial Officer, Jacques Jiha. The appointment will be made official at a press conference today at City Hall. He reportedly beat out four other candidates for the position. Jiha will now oversee the agency which oversees over $30 billion in tax collection every year. Read more.

Wrongly Convicted Man’s Attorney: ‘Where The Hell Was This Evidence’

A New York man, freed Tuesday after spending more than two decades in state prison, would not have been convicted if vital evidence had not been withheld by investigators, the man’s lawyer alleged. “Where the hell was this evidence all these years, and why wasn’t it turned over until 25 years later?” attorney Taylor Koss asked. Jonathan Fleming, 51, was 27 years old when he was convicted of a murder that he insisted he did not commit. Now, 24 years later, he has been released from Washington Correctional Facility in Comstock, N.Y. Read more.

After Serving 30 Years For A Crime He Didn’t Commit, Glenn Ford’s Wish List Is Being Fulfilled

It’s been nearly a month since Glenn Ford was released from jail after serving three decades for a crime he didn’t commit. And he’s wasted no time collecting the items and experiences he missed out on while in prison.Ford, a 64-year-old black man, was convicted by an all-white jury for the robbery and murder of Isadore Rozeman — a 56-year-old Louisiana watchmaker, Reuters reported. He sat on death row from March 1985 until March 11 of this year when, acting on new information that vindicated Ford, a judge ordered him released from Louisiana State Penitentiary.When he was finally set free, Ford had his eyes set on the novelties he never could get his hands on in jail — some mangoes and a fresh change of clothes.
