Wednesday, Roland Martin was joined by a panel of black women in the military to discuss a new Army ban on certain natural hairstyles.

The Army has long had a ban on twists and dreadlocks. Very recently, however, it decided to update its Army Regulation 670-1 with more detailed definitions of banned styles. For example, the Army does not allow twists or multiple braids bigger than a quarter of an inch in diameter. In addition, cornrows can be no bigger than a quarter of an inch. The new rules are set to go into place Monday.

One of the women was who joined Martin for “News One Now” was Sgt. Jasmine Jacobs of the Georgia National Guard. Jacobs wears her hair in twists and created a White House petition to block the new regulation. Check out what Jacobs had to say below about her experience with natural hair in the military.

Be sure to listen to “NewsOne Now” with Roland Martin, weekdays at 7 a.m. EST and watch at 9 a.m. EST on TV One.
