Marcus Smart and Michael Sam both made headlines over the weekend one for coming off the court to shove a fan and other the for coming out as a gay man.
If you haven’t seen the video, Marcus Smart a NCAA player for Oklahoma State reacted to a fan’s taunt during a basketball game by coming up off the floor and into the stands to shove Jeff Orr, longtime Texas Tech basketball fan. Both Marcus Smart and Jeff Orr apologized for their behavior and Oklahoma suspended Smart from playing in the next three games. Jeff Orr’s self-imposed suspension prevents him from attending the rest of Texas Tech’s remaining home games.
Michael Sam, the Missouri defensive lineman and 2013 SEC co-Defensive Player of The Year, announced in an interview with ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” that he was an openly, proud gay man. Sam, if he’s drafted, will be the first openly gay football player in the NFL.
