A Detroit homeowner has a very clear message for anyone daring to squat in his vacant home on the city’s west side: If you dare, you will be shot!
Channel 7 Action News reports that the sign (pictured) was discovered yesterday. The home on which the sign is placed is directly across the street from a church.
It reads: “Believe me you will get shot trying to squat here! I’m watching and waiting”
Residents of the Motor City are no strangers to urban blight and folks stealing scrap metal from homes–even with people inside of them. But this written display of force was too much, even for hardened residents used to violence in the city.
“We were in our way to church and look, oh my goodness, did they really put that on there?” one woman told Channel 7.
“It does send a pretty clear message,” says Imani Stinson.
Stinson, who owns several houses in the neighborhood, knows how frustrating it can be to deal with squatters. But she thinks using threatening signs to keep squatters at bay is taking it too far.
“Being a homeowner and people breaking up in and stealing equipment and vandalizing it, that is a problem, but we still can’t send a message we will hurt someone because of squatters,” says Stinson.
So, far no one has been able to catch up with the homeowner.
As NewsOne previously reported, squatting is a major issue in Detroit. Though, some residents don’t seem to have an issue with it. Check out the video below.
