It is a question that is heavily in rotation lately. People still question whether or not President Obama is a Muslim? He has answered that he is not a Muslim in the past, yet his religious background and heritage is still being questioned by the general public.  There is so much discussion surrounding this that it leads me to ask: If President Obama was a Muslim, would it change how we see him?

Drake Wants To Play Obama On The Big Screen

Unfortunately, the answer to that is yes. America is still very affected by the incidents of 9/11 and will forever be.  Life as we knew it changed since the incident.  For instance, security is in place in buildings where there was none or very minimal, people lost family members, etc. As a result of this, Americans now have an even more twisted racist view of all Muslims and any people of Middle Eastern descent. These are all constant reminders of the fear, loss, and sadness of 9/11.

Michelle Obama Is Entitled To Her Glitzy Vacation

To say that it would change is in fact an understatement.  For starters, President Obama already has been under suspicion for other reasons. One being that he is a Black male. Possessing this characteristic comes along with an assortment of stereotypes such as him not being intelligent enough, him giving special treatment to other African Americans and their causes, him being unwilling to protect the wants and needs of privileged White Americans because he must have some sort of resentment towards them and much more. Sure some of these assumptions may seem irrational when you read them but these are thoughts that the general public have always had and still do assume about Obama.

So when the commentary arises about him being a Muslim, the combination of all of these things send a shiver of fear down the backs of average Americans. So, not only is he Black but he is a Muslim as well! Immediately he becomes even more of a threat than he once was.

This is a tool of the media. They spread the rumor of him being a Muslim, despite him denying it, in order to inspire fear in us. After all, we cannot have a Muslim president after 9/11. That would be like Americans sleeping with the enemy. We would be committing the most insulting offense after the events of 9/11. This tool is also used to turn more Americans against President Obama as a person. It not only creates distrust for him but it also makes people generally dislike him because they associate him with 9/11, those that were lost, and the Muslims who they feel were responsible for that day.

It does not matter how many times he informs the media of his religious background. He could scream that he is a Christian from the mountain tops and still there would be people who would continue to spread that he is a Muslim because it is another way to create dislike for him from the general public.

Here is what President Obama had to say about his religious background in 2008:

“Let me just sort of be as clear as possible in terms of what that the background is.You know, I was raised basically by my mother, who came from a Christian background – small- town, white, Midwesterner. But, she was not particularly religious. My father, who I did not know – I spent a month of my life in his presence, otherwise he was a stranger to me – was raised in a household where his father had converted to Islam. But my father, for all practical purposes, was agnostic. My mother remarried an Indonesian and we moved to Indonesia. But for two years I went to a Catholic school in Indonesia, and then for two years went to a secular school in Indonesia. The majority of children there were Muslim. But it wasn’t a religious school. So almost all the facts that have been presented in the scurrilous emails are wrong. And I’ve been a member of my church now for almost 20 years and have never been a person of the Muslim faith.”

Would it change your opinion of Obama if announced that he was a Muslim? Would you have voted for him if he was a Muslim?
