Has anything really changed since the days of American slavery when dark-skinned Blacks were made to suffer even greater indignities than their lighter skinned counterparts? Ask today’s dark Black woman.
It’s a divide that’s rarely brought up in the mainstream: the difference between those with light skin versus dark skin. It stirs up controversy when celebrities are accused of lightening their skin color. Bill Duke exposes this divide in his new movie, “Dark Girls”. It’s a documentary that explores the deep-seated biases and attitudes about skin color particularly dark skinned women, outside of and within the Black American culture.
