Since the assassination of Martin Luther King, almost 900 cities have named streets after him. Of all of the cities with named streets, after MLK, Memphis Tennessee does not have one. That could all change if Memphis officials rename nine blocks of Linden avenue in their downtown area.

Berlin Boyd, a former city councilman, came up with the proposal earlier this year while still in office and it easily passed. He predicts it will pass the land use board, with a naming ceremony expected to take place on April 4. The board has final say unless an appeal is filed within 10 days.

Memphis already has a highway named after the civil rights leader. Supporters, of naming a street after him, believe this is more significant because Linden avenue is in the heart of the city. The proposal is expected to pass this week.
