Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am revealed recently to “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, that he has launched his own car company called “IAMAUTO.”

The vehicle is being put into production at a site that will be built in the old Los Angeles neighborhood, where the musician was raised.

On the show, Leno discussed how he was well aware that Will is a serious car aficionado and the mega performer responded:

I love technology, so you know I am a big technology freak and a geek.  I invested money in building my own vehicle because i want to bring jobs to the ghetto that I come from so why not invest.  Just like i invested in making a demo to start the Black Eyed Peas, now I want to invest to have a car company in the neighborhood that I come from.

According to the award-winning artist, Will tapped Chrysler to get a “whole bunch of original equipment manufacturer parts” that he used to build the vehicle.  Will said he kept the vehicle’s Chrysler chassis and created the shell, while also adding a booming Beats by Dr. Dre sound system.

Two years ago, Will managed to track down a rare DeLorean DMC-12, whose claim to fame was that it was the method of transportation for Michael J. Fox‘s character “Marty McFly” in the “Back to the Future” trilogy, for a video. Reportedly, Will developed an affinity for the vehicle and used the “Back to the Future” car as his inspiration for IAMAUTO (pictured below), which also sits low and has hard angular lines.

As for the DeLorean, which featured gull-wing doors and a rear-mounted engine, it was fraught with technical snafus and its company had a host of cost overruns and design fiascoes that caused the plant to shut down in 1982.  In addition, DeLorean owner John DeLorean got busted for 55 pounds of cocaine, and although he was acquitted of the drug charges, he had to face dozens of lawsuits that stemmed from the demise of his company.

IAMAUTO is scheduled to hit the streets later this year.
