WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — A Suit Claims Children Racially Harassed At SchoolSuit Claims Children Racially Harassed At School

Melissa Altman claimed in the suit that her children have been bullied and called various racial slurs for the past two years, and the suit says school officials and teachers knew of the alleged harassment but did nothing to stop it.

According to 2008 U.S. Census data, only 0.7 percent of Grant County residents were black, which is 7 percent below the statewide percentage.

Altman claims students tripped and kicked her children and taped obscene notes to their clothing, and she said they were also attacked on the school bus and had their homework stolen or altered by other students.

“My son, who was in the first grade at the time, was drug to the back of the bus,” Altman said. “They took a permanent black marker to his face, had it lettered on him. It was just awful; high school students did this.”

The suit claims that students told the children, who are 7, 9 and 11 years old and attend Mason-Corinth Elementary School, that they wished slavery were legal so they would not be allowed to attend school.

The suit seeks $1 million in damages, but Altman said she was more interested in the school changing its policies and procedures than she was in the money.

The school and its attorneys have not yet commented on the suit.
